Cold and ‘flu

December 28th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

R spent most of the day in bed with ‘flu.  J went for a walk in the morning, then we both went into town at lunch time.  The source of some distant rumbling sounds heard from the hotel earlier was revealed to be a hot-rod rally in the car park of the Ark Royal pub.  [...]

Cold and windy

December 27th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

We left the Crown, East Rudham after a full English and headed for Titchwell RSPB reserve.  In East Rudham the morning was bright and sunny and the ground and car had a thick layer of frost; closer to the coast it was less frosty.  At Titchwell we walked down to the sea through the reserve.  [...]

On the road to Norfolk

December 26th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

We set off from Bristol at 11:03.  Up to Birmingham and then east on the M6.  We stopped for lunch a little after one o’clock at the Bull’s Head in Arthlington, a few miles past the end of the motorway, where R had a nice ham sandwich and pint of Thwaites ‘Good Elf’, and J [...]

Thursday – Anchorage, Alaska

June 12th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

We left Williwar and on the way to Anchorage we stopped near Beluga Point to watch some Dall sheep high up on the granite mountain side above the road. We stopped at Beluga Point to look for Beluga whales, but didn’t see any. Maybe it was because the tide was out.
In Anchorage, we [...]

Wednesday – Soldotna and Portage

June 11th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

We left Skilak Hidden Lake and continued down the dirt road for 18 miles. Despite the warnings at the entrance to the road we didn’t really need the 4WD, unfortunately. We stopped at a few places to look at marshy lakes and hillsides and bear droppings.
We joined the main road and drove to [...]

Tuesday – more bears

June 10th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

After a fairly late start we walked up the road a bit to look at some salmon jumping upstream at an artificial fish weir. Then we drove to Exit Glacier and walked to the end of the glacier. The glacier is about 2.5 miles long and comes from the Harding Ice Field, like [...]

Monday – killer whale

June 9th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

We went on an all-day boat-trip from Seward to look at glaciers and wildlife. We set off at 8.30am on the Alaska Sunrise, captained by Andrea. It was bright and sunny when we left – a rare thing here, apparently – but we hit some fog as we got south of the mouth [...]

Sunday – Seward

June 8th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

Picked up RV from Go North, a short walk from the hotel. We were shown how it works, and then went to Fred Meyer to stock up on food and drink. We drove south towards Seward, skirting the water of Turnagain Arm, and then headed across the mountains. The weather started overcast [...]

Saturday – left Las Vegas

June 7th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

Set sat nav controls for the heart of Las Vegas Airport Rental Car drop-off and boarded the plane according to plan. Arrived at Anchorage and checked in to the Puffin Inn, not far from the airport.
Walked around Lake Hood – the busiest float plane airstrip in the world – float planes were taking off [...]

Friday – laundromat

June 6th, 2008  |  by richard  |  published in Holiday 2008

Got up late. Went to the ‘Wizard of Suds’ to do some laundry. Friendly place. We’d checked the hotel prices for laundry, but it started at $2.50 for a pair of socks. It cost us $2.75 to do the whole lot in the Wizard of Suds. And we got [...]
